Nobody ever ran out the front door hollering about resurfacing. It's the job you put off, right up until the morning you're standing there with your coffee admitting the slab is winning.

Drive Way Resurfacing
Drive way resurfacing is the right call when the slab under your feet is still solid and only the top layer has gone bad: scaling, pitting, hairline cracks spreading out from where the plow blade catches every winter. If the concrete has heaved so one section sits higher than its neighbor, or a piece rocks when you step on it, an overlay is a bandage on a broken bone, and I will say so before we start.
On a normal two-car drive we grind and patch one day and lay the overlay the next. Foot traffic that evening, vehicles after about three days.
What moves the price on driveway resurfacing is the square footage, how much of the old surface has to come off, whether a truck can get close, and how cold it is when we pour.
Asphalt Resurfacer
An asphalt resurfacer is what you want when the blacktop is worn gray on top but the base under it is still sound: we lay a fresh inch and a half to two inches over what's there instead of ripping the whole drive out.
First we cut the edges back, mill down at the garage apron so the new surface doesn't sit proud of the door, dig out the soft spots and shoot a tack coat so the new mat actually bonds. Skip the tack and it peels in sheets the first time a plow blade catches it. Alligator cracking is the one thing an overlay won't cure. Pave over that and it prints right back through by spring.

Driveway Resurfacing
Resurfacing a driveway is the call I take most often, and it's usually the same story: the slab underneath is still flat and sound, but the top layer has scaled, the broom finish has worn slick, and road salt has left it looking like a sugar cube. Most of what we do as driveway resurfacing contractors is overlay work on drives like that, from the short aprons up in McKnight to long runs out on the east side.
We grind and clean, patch what's soft, then bond a new wear layer over the top and cut it in at the existing control joints, so it moves where the old slab already moves. Skip that step and you get a fresh spiderweb by the second winter. Square footage, how much patching the old surface needs, and how close we can back a mixer to the work all shift the concrete resurfacing cost.
What the job involves
What resurfacing involves is less of a mystery than most people expect. We grind and pressure wash the slab first, because a polymer modified overlay bonds to clean, open concrete and to nothing else. Cracks get chased out and filled, low spots get built back level, then the overlay goes on and we cut control joints straight back over the old ones so the slab cracks where we tell it to.
Leave those joints out and a driveway resurfacing job will map every old crack back to the surface inside a year.
Two days is normal on a single drive. You can walk it the next morning, and the car stays off for about three.
Size, access for the mixer, how deep the damage runs and the temperature the week we pour are what move the price.
What it costs
Four things set what it costs, and none of them is guesswork. Size is the simple one: a single-car drive way resurfacing prices out nowhere near a wide double with a turnaround. When resurfacing is the wrong fix
Sometimes resurfacing is the wrong fix, and I'd sooner say that standing on the slab with you than after the check clears. Three cases where I'll talk you out of it.
If the pieces rock under your boot and the joints have opened wide enough to lose a quarter in, an overlay will crack right along those same lines by next winter and you've paid for the job twice. That slab needs concrete removal first, then new concrete flatwork poured over a proper base.
If your stoop is spalling and the risers are crumbling at the nose, no skim coat saves it. Rebuilding the concrete steps is the real answer.
And if runoff is soaking the concrete foundation wall, the grading and the downspouts come before anything else. We resurface concrete, not drainage. Resurfacing concrete companies who skip that conversation are selling you paint over a leak.
