Staining A Patio
Staining a patio isn't paint, and that difference is the whole ballgame. Acid stain reacts with the lime in the slab and lands somewhere in the tan, rust and green family, so you get mottling and movement instead of a flat coat. Water-based stains give you a wider set of concrete patio stain colors, but they still soak in rather than sit on top. That's why a painted concrete patio flakes off in sheets after one Springfield winter and a tinted concrete patio just softens over years.
Before we color anything, we strip old sealer, etch, and check the slab for moisture. Skip that and the stain goes blotchy in the spots that used to hold a grill.

Epoxy Patio Colors
Epoxy patio colors come up most often after somebody's seen a friend's garage floor and wants that same glassy look out back. Straight epoxy chalks and yellows in direct sun, so on an open patio we use it as the body coat and put a UV stable polyaspartic over the top. Flake blends hide dirt and hairline movement better than a solid color. Metallics look terrific under a covered porch and like a spilled puddle at two in the afternoon in July.
Prep decides everything. We diamond grind the slab, tape a plastic square down overnight to see if moisture is pushing up from below, and if it is, that coating peels by spring no matter which shade you picked. What the job involves
A concrete patio starts with digging, not pouring. We strip sod and loam down about a foot, then lay six inches of processed gravel and compact it in two lifts, because a slab sitting on soft fill will crack the first winter the valley throws at it. Then forms, wire mesh or fiber, a four inch pour, screed, float, and control joints cut the same day. Those joints aren't damage. They're us telling the crack where it's allowed to go, and it listens.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to tear out my old concrete patio to replace it?
Usually not. If the slab is sitting level and the cracks are hairline, we can grind it, patch it and put a bonded overlay on top, which is how most concrete patio repair around here ends. Tear out is for slabs that have heaved, dropped an inch at a joint, or cracked clean through because somebody poured them on soft fill with no base under them.
How thick should the slab be in this climate?
Four inches of concrete over six inches of compacted process stone, with fiber or rebar and control joints cut within the first day. Springfield winters push frost down deep, and a patio poured on dirt in October will tell you all about it by April. Proper base is the part nobody sees and the part that decides everything.
When can we actually use it?
Walk on it after two days, put the grill and the chairs out at about seven. Concrete keeps curing for 28 days, so we come back after 30 to seal it. A sealed concrete patio sheds spilled ketchup from a Fourth of July cookout instead of drinking it.
